Police: Newport Officer Drove Drunk In Cruiser

RICHMOND, Ky. - A Newport police officer is charged with DUI after he was allegedly driving drunk in his cruiser.

Officer Gregory Simmons was arrested in Richmond Thursday night. Newport Police Chief Robbie Hall says Simmons was in Richmond for training at the department of criminal justice training center.

According to Hall, Simmons was eating at a Mexican restaurant and apparently had a few drinks. When Simmons attempted to leave the restaurant, he got his cruiser stuck on a curb.

Several people at the restaurant then helped Simmons push his cruiser off the curb. During the process, according to Hall, some of the people felt Simmons had been drinking so police were called.

By the time police arrived, Simmons was gone. Officers caught up to him a short time later.

Hall says Simmons refused a breathalyzer test and was arrested for suspicion of DUI. In Kentucky, if you refuse a breathalyzer test, you lose your driver's license for six months no matter your guilt or innocence.

Simmons' cruiser was towed back to the Richmond police station where Hall picked it up Friday morning.

Hall says Simmons will be suspended without pay until the court proceedings in Richmond are over. From there, he will face city disciplinary action.

According to Hall, Simmons, whose been with the Newport Police Department since 1996, has been a "good officer."

Simmons was a Kentucky State Trooper before he joined Newport police.

[LawReport.org Editor's note: This happens a lot more than you think. The cops think the law doesn't apply to them.]
